Clevland Police go that extra mile for Dormanstown school boy


Cleveland police go extra mile for local school boy.

A heart-warming story has been shared with the Redcar blog by a local Dormanstown family. On Saturday the 8thof June a grey BMX was alleged to be stolen from outside the pet shop situated on West Dyke Road adjacent the railway station. The alleged incident took place at around 12.45pm, whilst 12 year school boy Ben Wilson stood only a few feet away at the entrance of the pet shop. Witnesses are requested to contact the police or Redcar blog if they are know anything regarding the alleged incident.

This is where the story takes a happy turn, 2 female constables attended the Wilson family home in Dormanstown to ask the routine questions. One of the officers contacted the family 2 days later advising that they had been no word of the BMX however young Ben had been so polite and mature regarding the theft of his bike that she could not stop thinking about it.

Advising that they did not normally do this, the officer then invited Ben to a local bike shop where he was allowed to choose from a selection of reconditioned bikes. The family are delighted with the extra mile attitude of the officer, whilst remaining upset with the original theft. The BMX had been a much sought after Christmas present and had recently been repaired after a minor fall. The family wish to thank Cleveland Police for all there help starting from the speed in which they responded to the initial call.

A family member said,” Ben was gutted he loves going over the bike course in Dormanstown with his pals and is always on his bike. You will never meet such a kind hearted soul as Ben, he has so many friends and never gets in any trouble. The police officer that put the smile back on his face deserves a big pat on the back. With so many petty thefts nowadays it is good to know Cleveland Police really do care.”

The alleged incident as mentioned happened on the 8th of June outside the pet shop on West Dyke Road close to the rail crossing at around 12.45pm. The alleged thief is said to be Caucasian around 20 years of age and was of a thin build. The assailant took off on the bike down West Dyke Road and then turned left onto Thrush Road before disappearing from site. If you have any details contact Cleveland Police on 01642 302626.
