Now,they return for a second season in 2014 with Iolanthe, a classic comic-opera by the famed Gilbert & Sullivan.
It follows the story of a band of fairies who find themselves entangled in a complicated story of love, marriage, and the House of Peers.
Fourteen young singers from across North America have travelled to Saltburn and Redcar to spend three weeks rehearsing and performing. Local baritone Jacob Ditchburn joins them as a member of the Lord’s Chorus.
THE OPERA
Iolanthe (1882)by W.S. Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan
This was the first of Gilbert and
Sullivan’s operettas to open at the Savoy Theatre. The story concerns a band of
immortal fairies who find themselves at odds with the House of Lords. The opera
satirises many aspects of British government and law and is as relevant and
funny today as it was in the Victorian era!
